Replacing a SIM card in a suga blu unit

If the Baton does not communicate the most common cause is that the SIM card is not working anymore.

What do the lights mean at the back.

After clocking a point

  • Green flashing, point clocked correctly
  • blue flashing, battery low
  • Yellow flash, moisture detected

When on the charger

  • Green on solid, baton finished charging
  • blue flashing, baton is charging

During idle mode

  • blue or white flashing, unit has not been able to communivcate with local network for more than 4 mins
  • red flashing, unit has not been able to communicate with local network for more than 20 mins

Before replacing the SIM card please ensure the unit has been place on a charger overnight so that it is fully charged. Wait for no lights to be flashing before opening the unit.

The following needs to be done to replace the SIM card in a Suga Blu unit.

  • Open the baton
  • Take out the board
  • Replace the SIM card
  • Place the board in a casing
  • Set the APN details of the SIM card
  • Test the baton to make sure its working
  • Seal the new casing

Open the baton

The baton has been designed to be replaced once opened. However if you do not have access to a new casing you can open the baton carefully and temporarily use the same baton casing when finished. Gently use a plumbing pliers to squeeze the baton near the front where it is attached and break the glue by gently squeezing and turning.

Take out the board

Remove the board carefully, take note of the orientation the board is in and try not to snag any cables.

Replace the SIM card

Remove the glue from the SIM card. Do not lift the SIM card off the board as the holder will be damaged. Once the glue has been removed pushing the SIM card in will take it out. A new SIM card can be pushed in place of the old one.

Place the board in a casing

Place the board back in a casing. Ensure the board slides along the rails made for it. The LED at the back should be facing the keying.

Set the APN of the SIM card

Some SIM providers Like Vodacom in South Africa do not need the APN set. Other usually do. This will be done by sending a specially crafted SMS to the device and waking it up.

Test the baton to make sure its working

Seal the new casing
